Is it possible to record shows from my DirectTV DVR unto my laptop if it is connected to the same monitor ?

kind of like when you used to record from TV to VCR, now I want stuff from my DVR unto my laptop.

You didn’t record from your TV set, bot from the source connected to it.
You will do similar, from your DirecTV receiver to the laptop, with a video capture device or tuner card (most can record from an STB).
The fact you watch on your computer monitor directly is of no consequence.
