I just got a DVR. Is there anyway that I can connect it to my computer, and download the shows to my notebook?

If you give more info on whatr brand DVR it is, what cable/satellite provider you have it would be easier to give you a good answer.
For the most part only Tivo or Modified DirecTV Tivo's can EASILY be used to download from the DVR to a PC. If it is a Comcast DVR (motorola for one) then I was just sent a way to connect to the Firewire port to a PC.
If you want more info whether you have a Tivo, DirecTV Tivo that you want to modify check out this site: ( http://www.dvrplayground.com ) Or a link to how to setup the Firewire connection to a comcast box feel free to send me an email..
